Elizabeth Jensen:
I have been involved with horses since I was about 8 years old. My dad signed my sister and I up for riding lessons in the dead of winter, in Indiana, just to get us out of the house. We both hated it at first, but by summer were both ready for our first horse. The next year I was ready for Western Pleasure at the horse show and barrel racing by junior high.
After college I entered the Amateur / Owner - Hunter / Jumper world, where I became a great success at spending money. I had an entirely different business career at the time and spent a lot of time pondering a career with horses that might actually allow me to earn a living. After a lot of research, I realized the most likely place would be the Thoroughbred ndustry.
Along with Bill Casner of WinStar Farm, I co-founded The Race For Education, a national scholarship foundation. We provide college scholarship to families of people working on horse farms and for young people hoping to pursue a career in the equine industry. Since 2002, our organization has provided over $2.5 million in college scholarships, primarily with donations from horse owners and other industry organizations.
