Steve Peterman:
I am a lifetime horseman who started in the racing business as a groom in Fairmont Park, Ill. I then moved on to the starting gate at Oaklawn in 1987 and continued on to Churchill Downs.
I have been the assistant starter at Churchill Downs for 20 years and I've been the track starter at Turfway Park since 2006 and do all the Kentucky tracks but Keeneland. I travel the circuit and have been affected by the reduction of racing dates here in the last few years. This is, of course because the horses are racing in other states and we have fewer horses to start.
Kentucky is my home. I have a house in Louisville and a place in Northern Kentucky. I want to stay in Kentucky because this is my home and this is MY INDUSTRY.
